At 1 p.m. on Sept. 26, police were called to Sonic at 2316 Mt. Rushmore Road for an attempted robbery. Two employees reported they were outside the restaurant when two male subjects approached them. One of the subjects pointed a gun at the employees and demanded money. When the employees didn’t comply, the suspects left on foot.

 

An officer spotted two men matching the suspect descriptions and acting suspiciously as they entered a room at the Budget Host Inn. Several RCPD and SD Highway Patrol units in the area responded. The two subjects came out of the room without further incident. Although they were not identified as the suspects in the attempted robbery, both Joshua Hatchett (age 22 of Rapid City) and Halsey Hutton (age 38 of Rapid City) had active warrants and were arrested. A third man, Philip Walker (age 25 of Rapid City), was found hiding in the hotel room and was arrested for a probation violation.

 

The suspects in the attempted robbery have not been located.
