At 10:42 a.m., Rapid City Police were called to an injury accident on West Omaha and Canal Street.
Charles Doherty, age 72 of Rapid City, was driving a Ford Ranger eastbound on Omaha in the outside lane. Police believe a medical condition caused Doherty to drive off the road, striking a pedestrian and running into a fence.
The pedestrian, Joel Nikolas, age 46 of Rapid City, was also walking eastbound on Omaha when he was hit. Nikolas was transported to the hospital and appears to have non-life threatening injuries.
Doherty was also transported to the hospital with serious injuries. There were no passengers in Doherty’s vehicle at the time of the accident. Police estimate total damage to the Ranger and fence at around $6,800. No citations were issued.
