Rapid City, S.D. –Rapid City schools are back in session next week, and police want to remind drivers to be careful.
“During the summer, drivers get used to zipping past schools without looking too carefully for kids,” said Lieutenant Mark Eisenbraun. “Now that children are heading back to school, drivers need to slow down, stay alert, and be prepared to stop for children crossing the street.”
Parents should also remind their children to use crosswalks, look both ways, and make sure drivers see them before entering the street.
“Sometimes kids get excited and dart out into the street without thinking about the consequences,” Eisenbraun said. “It’s important for parents to talk to their children about crossing safely, and for drivers to be extra cautious and aware of that possibility.”
Next week officers will be ramping up crosswalk and speed enforcement in school zones, to reinforce the importance of both driver and pedestrian safety. Find more crosswalk tips at www.rcgov.org/Police/crosswalksafety.html.
