Rapid City, S.D. –Just after 9 p.m. on August 15, Rapid City Police responded to a medical call on the 3000 block of West Omaha Street. They found an unresponsive 2-year-old girl, who had been left in the care of her mother’s boyfriend.

The girl was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital, and flown to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls for more extensive medical treatment. She died at Sanford Hospital this afternoon.

 

Based on the seriousness of her injuries, detectives from the Rapid City Police Department and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office opened an investigation last night. The boyfriend, Edward Berges, age 23 of Rapid City, was arrested this afternoon on charges of aggravated child abuse (Class 3 felony, punishable by 15 years in the state penitentiary and a $30,000 fine) and second degree murder (Class B felony, punishable by life imprisonment in the state penitentiary and a $50,000 fine).
