Dec. 16 - Rapid City Police Arrest Nebraska Burglary Suspect

Rapid City, S.D. – Earlier this week the RCPD assisted Nebraska law enforcement in apprehending a burglary suspect wanted on a felony warrant.

On the afternoon of Dec. 13, an RCPD detective spotted an 18-year-old male selling a large quantity of silver coins to a local pawn shop. After investigating, the detective discovered that, over a three-day period, the man and a second 18-year-old male had sold hundreds of silver coins to three pawn shops. The two men received thousands of dollars for the coins. When questioned, they told detectives they were selling the coins for a mutual friend.

The detective discovered that the friend, 20-year-old Rapid City man Steven Rezac, was wanted on a felony warrant from Nebraska for burglary, and was a suspect in the theft of a large coin collection in Ogallala, Neb.

At approximately 5 p.m. on Dec. 14, police received a tip concerning Rezac’s whereabouts. Police conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Disc Drive and Haines Ave. Rezac was taken into custody for possession of marijuana and the felony warrant. A large number of coins were found in Rezac’s bags inside the vehicle.

Police recovered the stolen coins that had been sold to Rapid City pawn shops. The total estimated value of the recovered items is more than $25,000.
