Rapid City, S.D. –A Rapid City man died last night, after he was accidentally hit by a car on Omaha Street.
At approximately 6:15 p.m. on Nov. 2, police were called to a car-pedestrian accident near Omaha and First Streets. A witness reported she was driving westbound on Omaha when she saw Kevin Shortbull Sr., 48 of Rapid City, stumble off the north curb into the outside lane of traffic. She pulled her vehicle over in the inside lane and exited to check on Shortbull, when she saw a 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 heading toward them in the outside lane.
The driver of the truck, 24-year-old Austin Cumiford of Rapid City, reported he saw the woman waving her arms, but did not see the victim in the road before striking him. The victim was wearing dark clothing and was not in a crosswalk. Shortbull was taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries.
Alcohol was not a factor for the driver; however, the victim was intoxicated at the time of the accident. The accident investigation is continuing.
