September 8, 2010 - Explosives

On September 8, 2010 at 1:09 p.m., the Rapid City Police Department responded to a report of explosive devices found at the Rapid City Landfill. Initial investigation reveals employees working at the Material Recovery Facility observed three grenades on a recycling conveyor belt. The conveyor belt was shut down and the building was evacuated. An Explosive Ordinance Disposal team from EAFB, SD was contacted. An examination by the EOD team revealed the grenades to be training rounds. The rounds were destroyed at the landfill by the team.
Citizens are reminded to contact local law enforcement for assistance if they find explosive devices.
