August 31, 2009 - School Safety

The Rapid City Police Department will be stepping up its enforcement efforts in school zones beginning tomorrow, the first day of school.  As always, the safety of pedestrians and motor vehicle drivers is of vital importance.  Drivers and pedestrians alike must ensure they take all the appropriate steps to remain safe as people get used to going to and from school.

Drivers are reminded to observe school zone speed limits around schools, and to be on the lookout for children in and around school areas.  Parents who are dropping kids off at schools are asked to do so in designated areas and not in the middle of the street.

Additionally, school buses will be running and drivers are reminded that passing a school bus with flashing red lights is illegal.

Pedestrians are reminded to cross streets at crosswalks and to look both ways to make sure it is safe to cross.

Together we can make the upcoming school year a safe year for everyone!
