July 17, 2009 - Motorcycle Fatality Crash

On 07-17-09, at approximately 10:16 a.m., the Rapid City Police Department responded to a two-vehicle crash at the 1400 block of West Main Street. A 2006 Harley Davidson, driven by Daniel Smith, 33, of Rapid City, was eastbound on West Main Street. A 1999 Dodge van driven by Malyn Eidem, 70, of Elk Point, South Dakota, was attempting to leave a parking lot and turn westbound on West Main Street. Eidem drove out across the eastbound lanes where he was then struck by the eastbound motorcycle.
Daniel Smith and his son, Hunter Smith, 8, who was a passenger on the motorcycle, were transported to Regional Hospital. Daniel Smith died as a result of his injuries suffered in the crash. Hunter Smith was reported in critical condition. Hunter was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Traffic on West Main Street was shut down for approximately four hours while members of the RCPD Critical Accident Reconstruction Team conducted the crash investigation.
The crash remains under investigation.
There were 7 ancillary crashes in the area where traffic was being diverted. None of these crashes resulted in injuries.
The RCPD appreciates the patience of the motorists who were inconvenienced by this temporary road closure.
