June 28, 2009 - Howard Johnson Express Robbery

On June 28, 2009 at approximately 6:05 p.m. the Rapid City Police Department responded to the Howard Johnson Express Inn at 950 North Street in reference to a robbery.

The front desk clerk described a man standing about 5 foot 10 inches tall, weighing about 170 pounds, dark hair that was cropped very short, wearing a white t-shirt with a blue emblem on the chest and blue jeans. The suspect pointed what the clerk described as a butter knife at her and asked her for the money. The clerk refused and the man left the hotel walking west. The area was searched for the suspect without success.

At 7:00 p.m. a Rapid City Police Officer noticed a man matching the description of the robbery suspect standing outside an apartment in the 900 block of Fillmore Street just to the north of the Howard Johnson Express Inn. A subsequent investigation was conducted.

Robert Lee McKinney, age 34, of Rapid City was arrested, charged with 1st Degree Robbery and placed at the Pennington County Jail. The knife was recovered.

1st Degree Robbery is a Class 2 felony with a maximum penalty of 25 years imprisonment and a fifty thousand dollar fine may be imposed.
