April 13, 2009 - Dark Canyon Road & West Highway 44 Injury Accident

On April 12, 2009, at approximately 10:00 p.m., the Rapid City Police Department and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an injury crash near the intersection of Dark Canyon Road and West Highway 44. An eastbound Ford Ranger pickup driven by Josiah Frink, 28, of Rapid City, struck Nick Byers, 28, of Rapid City, who was walking in the roadway. Byers was transported to Regional Hospital and is listed in critical condition.
Just prior to the crash, Byers was in a GMC pickup driven by Charles Humpal, 52, of Rapid City. An altercation in this vehicle resulted in Byers exiting the vehicle and attempting to walk from the scene. After the crash, Humpal left the scene and was later located by the RCPD and arrested for DUI.
At this time it does not appear any further charges will be forthcoming. The crash remains under investigation by the Rapid City Police Department and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.
