February 23, 2009 - Suspicious Death - 100 Block Saint Joseph Street Follow-up (2)

On February 20, 2009, at approximately 11:00 a.m., investigators from the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and Rapid City Police Department were called to a motel in the 100 block of Saint Joseph Street in reference to a deceased female found in her room. She was later identified as Jody Ellis (45) of Rapid City.
On February 23, 2009, an autopsy was conducted on Jody Ellis. The preliminary results indicated the cause of death was due to internal injuries from blunt force trauma and strangulation.
A suspect, identified as Jason Star (46) of Rapid City, was arrested late Saturday afternoon in connection with the death. These two had been living together in the room since February 12, 2009.
Jason has been charged with second degree murder. Second degree murder is a class B felony, punishable up to life imprisonment in the state penitentiary. In addition, a fine of fifty-thousand dollars may be imposed.
The case has been turned over to the Pennington County State’s Attorney’s Office for prosecution. Please contact their office at 394-2191 for additional information.
