On April, 1, 2008, at 1519 hours the Rapid City Police Department responded to a car-pedestrian accident at the intersection of 5th and Columbus St. A 12-year-old female student was crossing Columbus Street when she was struck by a vehicle heading northbound on 5th Street. The vehicle was a 1999 Dodge Intrepid driven by Mary Allington (age 26) of Rapid City. Ms Allington made an evasive maneuver, but was unable to avoid hitting the pedestrian.
The initial investigation indicated the juvenile had just crossed Columbus Street from north to south and, in a continuous manner, crossed 5th Street east to west when she was hit. It is believed the pedestrian did not utilize the electronic signal control device prior to crossing in either direction. The juvenile was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital having sustained only minor injuries. The driver of the Intrepid was not injured but was cited for Driving Under Revocation. No further charges are expected and the accident remains under investigation.
