The Rapid City Police Department has received reports from citizens of the community that they have been solicited by telephone and in person by representatives of the Police and Sheriff’s Association Law Enforcement Journal, seeking donations for the Retired and Disabled Police of America. While the Retired and Disabled Police of America is a corporate organization out of California with a certificate of authority to transact business in the State of South Dakota, it has no association or connection with the Rapid City Police Department or the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office. Further, an investigation has revealed that the solicitors were operating outside of the constraints of their State Use Tax license. A consultant for the organization has been notified to cease operation until appropriate licensing has been secured.

 

The information received by the department has been forwarded to the South Dakota State Department of Revenue. That office is responsible for the licensing and taxation of such organizations conducting this type of business.
